From April 15 to May 15, 2014, Liwa Art Hub hosted the Upcycle Art Festival – “Patterns of Unity,” a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with the oil and gas industry. This unique residency brought together 28 international artists, designers, and photographers, inviting them to explore the artistic potential of discarded industrial materials.
For an entire month, participants immersed themselves in a collaborative environment, living and working at Liwa Art Hub. The festival encouraged cross-disciplinary exchange, allowing creatives to expand their artistic horizons through daily interactions and shared experiences. Artists were provided with reclaimed materials from oil and gas companies – scrap metal, old machinery, rusted components – transforming industrial waste into extraordinary works of art.
The collection that emerged from this festival is a testament to artistic ingenuity and sustainability. Through the hands of skilled artists, materials that were once forgotten found new life. Solid iron rods were transformed into the limbs of mythical creatures, their rigid structures reimagined into dynamic forms full of movement and expression. Rusted metal scraps, once discarded and lifeless, evolved into delicate wings and abstract compositions, their textures and imperfections adding depth and character to the artworks. Car remnants and abandoned tools, remnants of industrial progress, took on new meaning as they were reshaped into majestic horse heads and sculptural forms, embodying strength, resilience, and creative renewal.

The festival culminated in a major group exhibition in Abu Dhabi, showcasing the striking and diverse collection of works created during the residency. Audiences witnessed firsthand the innovative ways in which artists engaged with industrial materials, demonstrating the endless creative possibilities within upcycling.
Among the renowned artists who participated in this event were Nasser Palangi, Azaa Darwish Al Qubaisi, Charity Vaida Bandason, and many more. Each artist brought their unique perspective and talent, contributing to a dynamic and inspiring artistic exchange.
The Upcycle Art Festival – “Patterns of Unity” was more than an art residency; it was a statement on the intersection of art, industry, and environmental consciousness. By repurposing waste into meaningful artistic expressions, the festival emphasized the importance of sustainability in contemporary art and the limitless possibilities of creative transformation.
